Shubman Gill to play for Glamorgan
Indian batter Shubman Gill is all set to make his debut in the County Championship this year. The youngster will represent Glamorgan for the remainder of the 2022 season. However, the number of matches will depend on the visa clearance.
If everything works well as per the plan and the timeline, Gill will become the 7th Indian player to be signed by a County team this season after Cheteshwar Pujara (Sussex), Washington Sundar (Lancashire), Krunal Pandya, Mohammed Siraj (both Warwickshire), Umesh Yadav (Middlesex) and Navdeep Saini (Kent).
Gill will be the third Indian player to represent Glamorgan. Ravi Shastri (1987-91) and Sourav Ganguly (2005) are the other two Indians to play for the club.
Gill is in excellent form at the moment. He is coming off an excellent outing against West Indies and Zimbabwe. He notched up 205 runs at 102.50 and 245 runs at 122.50 on average respectively. The Indian top-order batter has been in and out of the Indian team for a while now. He has played 11 Test matches for India, scoring 579 runs at an average of 30.47. His last Test came against England in the 5th Test in July this year. He notched up 17 and 4 runs. India ended up losing the game as well.
Gill has experience playing 12 First-class matches for his home team Punjab in the Ranji Trophy. The opener has an excellent record of 1176 runs at an average close to 66.
Glamorgan are currently in the 3rd spot of the Division Two table. They have five wins from their 10 matches so far. The team will be playing four more matches this season.
Their next match is against Worcestershire on September 5th in Cardiff.
Three other overseas players featured for the team this year. However, none of them would be available in September as Colin Ingram will be at Caribbean Premier League. Marnus Labuschagne and Michael Neser will be back in Australia.
New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel will play in the final month of the season for Glamorgan.
